Regulators to consider ban on lead bullets to protect condor

MONTEREY, Calif. (AP) - State wildlife regulators will consider banning or limiting lead bullets for big-game hunting to protect endangered California condors.

The state Fish and Game Commission voted yesterday to serve notice of its intent to amend hunting regulations to eliminate lead ammunition in the state's condor ranges.

Studies have shown that lead from bullets left in carcasses from game animals are a major source of lead poisoning in the giant birds.

The commission will consider three options when it meets in Arcata next month. It could ban the ammunition statewide, ban it in specific deer-hunting areas, or offer hunters incentives to voluntarily use non-lead ammunition.
