"Alfred Craft of West Monroe, LA, recently received a five-year prison sentence along with a $50,000 fine, a bill for $11,000 in restitution to the state of Arkansas, and (I really like this part) a bill for the $23,000-per-year cost of his incarceration."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Britton Cloe Lewis, the Kern Co. idiot that killed AC8 in February 2003, get off quite a bit lighter?? Lewis was also tried and found guilty under the Migratory Bird Act. "I can honestly say I knew nothing about these condors," Lewis told a magistrate judge before sentencing. "I sincerely wish I could take back what I've done." Lewis claimed to not know he had shot a condor, he said he thought it was a "buzzard". He was fined $20,000, forfeited his firearm and given five years probation and ordered to perform 200 hours community service. Lewis also was fined and sentenced to three years probation for killing a white-tailed deer in Illinois in 2001. Lewis pleaded guilty to falsely saying he was a resident to obtain a hunting permit there. It became a federal crime when he brought the deer's mounted head to California in April 2002. Lewis was not charged with violating the U.S. Endangered Species Act, apparently because of a little-known 1998 Justice Department policy that seeks a higher level of proof in such cases, according to a source familiar with the investigation. Essentially a defendant must know the animal was endangered, said the source, who asked for anonymity because it is a pending legal matter. If you want to read up on Britton Cole Lewis, here you go.
